2026 SLAMDANCE FILM FESTIVAL REVIEW!
Honestly, what the fuck did I just watch? Danny is My Boyfriend is a feverdream of nonsensical bullshit from start to finish, never relenting in its absurdity, and remaining unapologetic in its delivery. With that, Danny is My Boyfriend manages to work, even though it’s a complete shitshow.
When two young women, Mechi (Mechi Lakatos) and Lucy (Lucy Sandler), realize that they’re dating the same man, they devise a plan to get back at him. Femininity, morality, and stupidity come into play in Danny is My Boyfriend, and hijinks ensue as a result.
Most of the story revolves around Mechi and Lucy exacting revenge on their mutually cheating boyfriend, but there are so many moments that have absolutely nothing to do with the plot of this film. Danny is My Boyfriend frequently loses track of itself, having to regain its footing time and time again as it attempts to barrel forward, but is always slowed by the speedbumps that are the narrative flaws. Why do we need a minute-long scene in which a young boy jumps his father’s car? It doesn’t have anything to do with the primary narrative, it does nothing to propel it forward, and I can’t fathom why Writer-Directors Lakatos and Sandler chose to include these things in their film other than personal preference. With all of that said, Danny is My Boyfriend could have been shortened monumentally.
Someone recently used the phrase inde-er than inde referring to films with a limited budget and little-to-no studio backing. Danny is My Boyfriend, regardless of the actual circumstances of the production, feels like it’s adequately represented by that aforementioned phrase. This film very much feels like a passion project, one in which the creators were incredibly close to the material, and where they took their limited experience and put it to the test. That’s clear in the unpolished script, with frumpy dialogue, gratuitous moments, and a somewhat fractured narrative.
As I mentioned at the top of this review, however, I did manage to enjoy Danny is My Boyfriend--and while that may not be apparent, I assure you that the duo of Sandler and Lakatos do deliver something worth your time.
Danny is My Boyfriend is aesthetically raw, void of all frills or embellishment, focusing rather on the reality of the world in which it’s set. That rawness can be inviting, but the simplicity, the mirroring of the real world by Lakatos and Sandler, sometimes distracts from the point of the film. A film steeped in femininity, this filmmaking duo could have honed in on some strong, uber-popular, contemporary talking points, but there’s just something missing, a rigidity absent that needed, so greatly, to be present in Danny is My Boyfriend.
