Voices: The Danny Gans Story (2025)

Danny Gans just might be the most famous comedian that you’ve never heard of. From world tours to Vegas residencies, Danny used his voice talents to create groundbreaking shows and captivate audiences for years. Voices: The Danny Gans Story is directed by Danny’s son, Andrew Davies Dans, as he attempts to resurrect the legacy of his father and uncover the mysterious truth surrounding Danny’s death. 

What initially promises to be that standard documentary quickly becomes something far more emotionally appealing and riveting. Andrew does an exceptional job of reeling viewers in with the mystery of his father’s untimely death, then transitions to the story of Danny’s life. Danny was clearly a unique talent that managed to surpass anyone and everyone that existed in this niche place of entertainment. Voices: The Danny Gans Story does include fluff pieces about the titular character, but rather allows his performances to speak for themselves. Danny shines brightly, and his personality is what ultimately drives Voices: The Danny Gans Story forward. 

I initially got in inkling that Voices: The Danny Gans Story might be something similar to Art for Everybody, a documentary based on the life of famed artist Thomas Kinkade, in which the Kinkade that everyone loved was nothing like his public persona behind closed doors. Voices: The Danny Gans Story seemed to possess a touch of this sentiment, that something unsavory about Danny would eventually be brought to light, but Andrew ensures that viewers understand after just the first few minutes of the documentary that this is most certainly not the case. Danny’s end was anything but inspiring, but his life, his passion for his craft, and the love that he had for his family certainly is. Just as Andrew allows Danny’s talent to play a prominent role in this film, he does the same for the passion that Danny seemingly possessed in every facet of his life. 

Voices: The Danny Gans Story is an incredibly simple documentary, but it still manages to do far more than those documentaries that attempt to introduce a series of frills throughout. Andrew is masterful in his approach toward presenting his father to the world, expressing to those unfamiliar with his talents what he was all about, and likely appealing to those that enjoyed his entertainment years ago. 

I found Voices: The Danny Gans Story to be incredibly entertaining, truly captivating, and an eye-opening experience from start to finish. Andrew promises to cover the mysterious death of his father, and he keeps that promise by the film’s conclusion–though he manages to take viewers on a journey through Danny’s life that allows viewers to forget about his untimely death and focus on the positive aspects of his incredible life. Voices: The Danny Gans Story is a breath of fresh air for the documentary genre, and I’m massively impressed by what Andrew Davies Gans is able to accomplish in this film.
