As filmmaker Christa Couture travels to the great expanses of Canada, she meets eccentric individuals, learns about wild, outlandish customs, and learns a thing or two about cultures that she’s never even heard of. In Postcards season five’s third episode “Postcards from…Dawson City,” Christa experiences gold mining, living off the grid, and mummified toes?
The first thing that anyone will notice about “Postcards from…Dawson City” is Couture’s voice. It’s so powerful and vibrant, wonderfully cutting through the vast, beautiful landscapes that are Dawson City, Yukon. The aesthetic of this short episode is stunning, one of the most appealing things that I’ve seen on screen in some time–and yet Couture manages to insert herself in a way that makes her the most prominent aspect of the episode. She does such a wonderful job of enunciating, of ensuring that every aspect of Dawson City’s way of life is made clear.
Furthermore, her discussions with the Dawson City locals are natural. Nothing seems over rehearsed, and their conversation seems genuine. That further immerses viewers in this series, bringing to life the culture and all that Couture experiences throughout. “Postcards from…Dawson City” is wonderfully immersive, and that’s due, in large part, to Couture’s presence and prowess.
In a series of this nature I’m honestly not looking for fantastic cinematography; I’m really just looking for a compelling story–something to drive it forward and entertain me for a short period. However, “Postcards from…Dawson City” has beautiful cinematography that not only captures the beauty of Dawson City, but the conversation between Couture and her counterparts throughout. I found myself often mesmerized by what Director of Photography Richard Tran was able to bring to the table. He captures things in such an artistic way, and he draws the eye to just the right place at any given time. As he pulls viewers from place to place, he always finds ways to entice viewers, to draw them further into the episode.
“Postcards from…Dawson City” is short, sweet, and to the point. It’s full of wonderful people, interesting tidbits of Yukon culture that are unlike anything that you’ve seen before. Brought to life by Couture, Directors Danny Berish and Ryan Mah, and Tran, “Postcards from…Dawson City” is stunning, entertaining, and full of life.
