Eight Below (2006)

Paul Walker is well-known for his role of Brian O’Connor in the Fast and Furious series, and, because of this, is typically associated with action films that run along the same lines as that franchise. It is often overlooked that Walker portrayed roles in films such as Meet the Deedles (1998) and Monster in the Closet (1986), and, while these are films meant for children, the role of Jerry Shepard, in this film, still seemed odd for Walker. While this did not appear to fit Walker’s typical film selection, I thought that he was still convincing in his role. I very much enjoy Walker as an actor, but, it was the dogs in this film that stole the show. They played a huge role, but it was their charisma and their energy that made them so enjoyable. The story, as a whole, was intriguing and, at the same time, was heart wrenching. The dogs did more than just help to propel the film and the story forward, they were, essentially, the only reason I remained interested in the film. It is typical for viewers to struggle with any type of animal to endure hardships of any kind; this film, from beginning to end, portrayed the struggles that eight sled dogs endured for nearly two hundred days. The dogs’ resolve made the film entertaining and ultimately successful. For a children’s film, I thought that the story was a bit rough and that some of the visuals pushed the envelope of a PG rating. Even though there are numerous moments of heartbreak throughout, this is a wonderful film of survival and friendship that I believe the entire family can appreciate. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0397313/?ref_=nv_sr_1?ref_=nv_sr_1
