Victorian Ladies (2025)

-Written by Michelle Vorob.

Victorian Ladies is a short comedy Web series by Becca Schall and Jessica Taylor of Accountable Comedy. Composed of what I can only describe as “comical Victorian paper dolls,” Victorian Ladies is voiced by Schall & Taylor, while you watch elegant cut-out illustrations of four young Victorian women socialize with each other. The figures often dart on and off screen, essentially like popsicle stick paper dolls being moved about by hand, which adds to the humor.

Victorian Ladies follows the lives of four friends, Abigail (Taylor), Beatrice (Taylor), Caroline (Schall), and Daphne (Schall). Despite the entire first season coming in at under nine minutes, each Webisode has plot points, witty banter, and, in my opinion, got funnier as it went on, until I was not just entertained, but literally laughing.

As usual, I went into this only knowing the title, so I thought maybe Victorian Ladies would be another Downton Abbey or The Gilded Age. Imagine my surprise when I saw paper dolls and heard silly voices. I wondered if I would even like it at all, until the banter kicked in. Along with close ups of the doll faces at pivotal moments, the hilarity built like a slow-growing laugh bomb.

Victorian Ladies features crashing a funeral to find a husband, owing your friends money, holding hands with a young man for the first time (scandalous), and trying to do good for the less fortunate, all while helping your friends live their best lives. I know that doesn't necessarily sound funny in and of itself, but you should know I just watched it again and it still made me laugh. Do yourself a favor and take a few minutes to watch Victorian Ladies.
