The Break-Up (2006)

Writer: Kyle BainKyle Bain

I remember seeing this film in the past and I know that I liked it, however, I did not remember to what extent I enjoyed it. While I suppose that the story could be a bit disheartening as two people struggle in their lives as they separate from one another, the comedy in this film was so funny that it was hard to harp on the difficulties that each character faced. Juel Bestrop and Jeanne McCarthy must have exceeded any expectations that were had for the casting of this film. Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston, as well as the entire supporting cast, did a phenomenal job of portraying their respective characters. Vaughn’s Gary Grobowski and Aniston’s Brooke Meyers were incredibly funny together and, at the same time, their deeper scenes were just as perfect. I thought that the two actors were able to feed off of one another in a way that I don’t think I’ve seen before (especially in a comedy). Films categorized as a comedy do not often rely on acting to get through to the audience, but this film was different in that sense. The comedy would have certainly been enough to reach the audience and keep them engaged throughout the film, but the acting is what pushed this film over the edge and made it far better than one could have expected. Along with Aniston and Vaughn, actors like Peter Billingsley, Jason Bateman and John Favreau were exceptional in their roles as Andrew, Riggleman and Johnny O, respectively. They added a further dimension of comedy and drama as the film progressed and each of their roles, regardless of how small, made the film better. I think what attracted me to the story in this film was the fact that Gary and Brooke’s relationship reminded me a lot of Ross and Rachel’s relationship in the television series, Friends. The banter, back and forth, between the two characters were incredibly similar to that of the characters in Friends. I thought that the film moved along well and never really had any dead moments that left me wishing for something more or something different. I felt that this film was well executed from writing, to acting, to cinematography. This film was phenomenal and I feel that this is a film that I wouldn’t hesitate to watch again if ever it were to pop up on television.  https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0452594/?ref_=nv_sr_1
