The Black Cauldron (1985)

This is very different compared to most other Disney animated films. It’s hard to explain what exactly was different about it other than it didn’t have the same family entertainment feel that you might typically find in a Disney animated film (even compared to ones that came out around the same time); possibly because it was darker than other Disney films. What I found interesting about this film is that there were many similarities to J.R.R. Tolkien’s Hobbit/Lord of the Rings series (and Peter Jackson’s Hobbit/Lord of the Rings film series). Similarities like Gurgi to Gollum, the young unlikely hero in Taran and Bilbo/Frodo and essentially the entire point of the main character(s) traveling to a dark a mysterious place make me question whether Tolkien inspired the writers and directors of this film or these writers and directors inspired Peter Jackson (or both). Gurgi is, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the strangest characters to ever be in a Disney film. Taran, I believe, was a very underwhelming hero. He seemed too sheepish to be the hero he was expected to be; but as most Disney films will do, the underdog came out on top (thanks to the help of his pig). This definitely wasn’t my favorite Disney film, but I certainly didn’t hate it like Steph thought I would. http://m.imdb.com/title/tt0088814/
