Silent Chirping of Invisible Digits is a film that is nearly impossible to describe. It’s a void—where nothing happens.
Sounds akin to television fuzz (is that even a thing anymore?), buzzing of insects, and a high-pitched whirring combine to create something dizzying, overstimulating, and challenging to watch. With both nothing and everything happening at the same time, Silent Chirping of Invisible Digits feels like a lump in your throat, and it’s hard to swallow.
What’s the purpose of this film? Did Director Vera Sebert simply throw together some noises in the hopes of frustrating her audience? If that was her purpose (though I highly doubt it), then she likely found great success. However, the reality is that cinephiles, and those willing to analyze a film deeper, will likely find something enchanting about Silent Chirping of Invisible Digits, as it’s an apt metaphor for the great void present in life. What’s the purpose of life? What are we all searching for? We are all abrasive in our journey toward finding happiness, and that sentiment is clearly present throughout the course of Silent Chirping of Invisible Digits.
In one of my shortest reviews to date, I feel that I’ve effectively covered all that needs to be discussed in regard to Silent Chirping of Invisible Digits. Metaphorically the film is strong, though it’s quite clear that Sebert will antagonize some viewers with her short film. Personally, I feel that this film is an example of there being more than meets the eye. There’s something relevant and grounded within this film, regardless of the fact that it’s heavily veiled by the insane visuals.
Directed by Vera Sebert.
