Salt Marsh (2025)

-Written by Michelle Vorob.

2025 CAMDEN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL REVIEW!

Salt Marsh is a short documentary by Tom Bell, about the work of landscape artist Mitchell Rasor. Mitchell doesn't just paint the landscape, he literally incorporates the landscape into his paintings. Rasor paints beautiful, muted, watercolor scenes of the Spear Farm Estuary Preserve in Yarmouth, Maine, using an indigenous plant in place of a paintbrush, and submerging his canvases in the water. Rasor comes out to the Salt Marsh for solitude and wants to preserve and convey the wintertime beauty of the Salt Marsh in his work.

This succinct short film not only highlights the work of Rasor, but highlights issues of ecology, climate change and destruction of natural resources, simply by interviewing Rasor about his work and showcasing the land as he discusses Salt Marshes. There is no agenda, it just makes you think, as you learn the history and hear what moved Rasor to showcase the Salt Marsh in his work.

Points North Institute has stated The Camden International Film Festival is taking place at various venues in Camden and Rockland, Maine, from September 11th through the 14th, without a virtual festival this year. If you're in the area and would like to attend, you can purchase tickets in person or online [pointsnorthinstitute.org].
