When friends Clara (Marie Zabukovec) and Léa (Lana Boy) go away together for a weekend, suppressed feelings quickly rise to the surface. My Best Friend sees a decision made, one that has the potential to alter their friendship forever. Now the two women must face the truth, that their reality will never be the same.
My Best Friend is edgy, it’s incredibly sexy, it’s passionate, it’s just about everything you need in a short film.
So, what makes it edgy? It explores the dynamics of an open relationship and a newly-formed lesbian relationship. Regardless of the fact that we’re in the year 2024, content of this nature can sometimes be off putting to viewers, particularly if it isn’t addressed properly. My Best Friend is subtle in its approach toward the relationship between Léa and Clara, and in doing so, it becomes more accessible.
What’s so sexy about My Best Friend? Well, there’s a sex scene toward the end of the film in which both Boy and Zabukovec remove their shirts and their breasts are exposed for a couple of minutes. The fact of the matter is that, whether you enjoy watching this or not, this scene would fall under the umbrella of “sexy.” The scene in question goes on for some time, longer than I anticipate that it would. To be honest, I didn’t expect there to be any nudity at all, but rather the allusion to nudity just before the film cut to the next scene. Writer-Director Elina Street clearly isn’t worried about ruffling some feathers, about putting it all out there for everyone to see (even if “it all” isn’t even hers).
My Best Friend is a film full of passion. That passion extends beyond the content of the film, far beyond just the relationship between these two characters. That relationship is full of passion, and it’s made clear in a series of ways other than just sexual. It’s clear the time and effort put into this film by Street, as every second of the film is full of emotion, full of a rawness that resonates with viewers and transcends far beyond the film.
Again, My Best Friend is just about everything you need in a short film. The characters are developed quickly, the purpose of the film is quickly realized, and not a minute passes that isn’t effective in bringing this story to life. Using a spectacular amount of intimacy (represented particularly well in the cinematography), romanticizing nearly every moment of the film, and making it accessible to all, beyond the bounds of the specific relationship depicted in the film. My Best Friend is beautiful, and a thrilling ride from start to finish.
