Obviously, this film couldn’t possibly live up to the first film. With that being said, this film truly held its own in the series and was almost as funny as the first. Similar to “Bruce Almighty” this story takes place in world full of imperfection, in a world where people struggle to trust and to love one another and follows a family that, through thick and thin, are able to stick by one another. Tom Shadyac and the writers present their audience with a number of feel good moments. For those who are into the religious aspect of life, this story hits home far more than its predecessor. Continuity is not necessarily an issue when it comes to some comedies (because the point is often to make people laugh rather than to tell an incredible story). However, I did find it interesting how much the character of Evan Baxter changed between the first film and this one (even early in the film). This, very well, could just be character development, however, there was such a huge jump from the first film to the second that it seems more likely that the writers wanted a particular character for the second film and decided to change Baxter’s character to help fit their scheme. Wanda Sykes is not typically my favorite actor; I often find her to be quite annoying. She, however, may have been the funniest character in the entire film. This is a feel good film with family-friendly humor (much more so than the first film). I definitely didn’t remember liking this film as much as I did tonight. It’s easy to be skeptical about this film, but this truly was fantastic fun. https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0413099/
