Creature from the Haunted Sea (1961)

Writer's picture: Kyle BainKyle Bain

I was surprised to see the use of cartoons at the beginning of the story. Roger Corman used these cartoons and a narrator to get the audience to understand the film from the very beginning. I thought that, while the effort was valiant, Corman failed miserably (and the narrator actually became fairly annoying by the end of the film). I read the plot summary prior to watching this film, it was weird, but I was excited to see how the film played out. I couldn’t have been more disappointed. This film was, quite possibly, one of the worst films I have ever seen. I was bored throughout the course of the film and it seemed outdated. I thought that this film seemed much older than it was and this caused me to lose some interest in the film. I thought the monster was about the least intimidating monster I’ve ever seen in a film. It was clearly a knock-off of the monster in Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954). The monster’s head actually resembled the sorting hat from the Harry Potter films which made it quite comical. With the exception of the first two minutes of the film, nothing happened until about the thirty-five minute mark. The audio in this film was terrible. I’m not sure if this was a result of poor filmmaking or just due to the fact that it was released into public domain some time ago. While this is surely a plausible reason, I have yet to watch a film that had been released into public domain sound this horrible before (the sound was terribly muffled and it sounded as if it was recorded inside of a tin can). The story, as a whole, just seemed fractured and poorly put together. Much of what was taking place was completely unrelated to the rest of the film and caused me to lose even more interest. I highly recommend that no on watch this film unless you are seriously in need of some useless background noise. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054768/?ref_=nv_sr_1
