Cloverfield (2008)

This film is very War of the Worlds-esque. I always find it interesting to see a film from the point of view of one (or more than one) of the actors in the film. This film allows the audience to see and feel the horror that anyone would have felt during a horrific attack like the one depicted in this film using a personal camera that T.J. Miller’s “Hud” carries with him throughout the film. It’s always a risk to use relatively unknown actors to star in a film, however, Alyssa Weisberg, and the rest of the crew involved in casting did a phenomenal job. Actors like Lizzy Caplan, Jessica Lucas and T.J. Miller had been very unestablished at this point in their acting careers (this was Miller’s first acting role). Considering that these young actors didn’t have huge resumés going into this film, Weisberg must have seen something very special in each of them. She certainly wasn’t wrong, as each of the actors did a fantastic job in this film. Miller’s “Hud” was very much the comic relief throughout the entire film and while that can sometimes be annoying in a film as serious as this, I felt that he may have actually been the best character. The film is obviously fictitious and the majority of what happens in the film is highly unlikely, however, some of the things that took place in this film were just unreasonable. For one, during a city-wide evacuation, military personnel would never allow civilians to randomly roam the street while they are firing on any type of threat and, another is that civilians would never be allowed to record, with any type of device while in a military base during a situation similar to the one in the film. I know these are minor infractions considering the film’s story, however, it truly bothered me that these things were overlooked. Aside from these small mistakes, I thought that the film was well put together and was ultimately

successful. I have yet to see either of the other films connected to this, however, I imagine that if filmmakers felt the need to make two more films, this film must have been successful in some regard.  https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1060277/?ref_=nv_sr_3
