Chronicle (2012)

Writer: Kyle BainKyle Bain

Superhero films are something that have become the norm in Hollywood these days. With that understanding, Josh Trank and Max Landis did a fantastic job of finding a new way to present the world with a story of new-found superpowers. From beginning to end, this film possesses some suspense that helps to move the film along smoothly and effectively. I thought the way the motion picture was filmed was unique and smart. Between the use of Dane DeHaan’s Andrew Detmer’s camera and other cameras in the area, Josh Trank was able to make the film more personal. The audience is able to see, first hand, the perils of gaining powers and becoming “someone” after having a terribly rough life. The film skipped around a little bit; so, rather than see every waking minute of the characters’ day, we only saw what was important (the use of a personal, handheld, camera made it easier for the story to jump around). I thought the way the director went about handling this aspect of the film was done well. Along with the use of the camera, the acting of Dane DeHaan, Michael B. Jordan and Alex Russell make a story that would typically be unbelievable quite believable. Their performances drew me in and made me feel for each of their characters. While this story is very much about the superpowers gained by these high school students, the issues faced by these kids take a lot of the focus of the film, making it much more relatable than if the film was strictly about superpowers. I enjoyed the direction Trank and Landis went with this film. This film holds its own in the realm of superhero thrillers. https://m.imdb.com/title/tt1706593/
