Captain Marvel (2019)

As most who follow the Marvel Cinematic Universe know at this point, each of the films in that universe opens with a montage of clips from other films as the Marvel logo slowly makes its way to the forefront of the screen. Marvel producer, Kevin Feige, along with the other minds behind this film decided it was best to pay tribute to the father of Marvel, Stan Lee, after his passing just months before this film’s release. While it was a touching tribute to a great man, it served as a phenomenal introduction to the film. Fans were, as soon as the first clip of Stan Lee graced the big screen, excited and more energized about the film than they had been at any point prior to the film’s release. Captain Marvel takes the audience back to the 1990’s, where Blockbuster and Radio Shack were still relevant and the Avengers initiative first began. Directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck did a wonderful job with the action scenes, the dialogue and, most successfully (with the help of casting director Sarah Flynn), the actors they chose. Choosing the actor to portray Captain Marvel in the MCU was incredibly important. With the success of Wonder Woman (2017) just two years prior to this release, and Marvel fans becoming antsy for a female lead in the universe, Flynn had her work cut out for her when making this decision. While Brie Larson was criticized on many occasions, it seems that she was most certainly the right choice. The tone of the film, while dramatic at times, is often that of humor (aligning with the other films in the MCU). Larson worked well with Samuel L. Jackson and the two make one of the best duos in the MCU to date. Throughout the film the two feed off of one another’s sarcasm and constantly present the audience with enjoyable and relatable humor (one of the funniest jokes being about Nick Fury’s eye). This film connected so many dots in the MCU and allowed audiences to see a different side of some of the things and characters that they have come to love. Seeing different sides and being given a new understanding of the other things in the Marvel Universe is what this film did best. While it delivered a fantastic story with great characters, it was those connections to other films that were most exciting. I thought that the actors, writers and directors--as well as everyone else involved in making this film--successfully accomplished their goal of introducing a powerful female character into the MCU. The film is successful both as a standalone superhero film and as one of the newest installations in the MCU. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4154664/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2
