A man (Dan Berkey) sits alone in the bathroom, contemplating his next move. He strips down to his underwear and leaves the bathroom. Laying on a bed is a scantily clad woman; he touches her, kisses her, smells her. Then he begins asking her questions. These are the things that happen Between Four Walls.
The slow, methodical movements of Berkey help to make the film what it is. He’s genuine in all that he does, but the way he moves in such a deliberate manner propels Between Four Walls to new heights. He’s creepy, mysterious, and he’s just what the film needs to thrive. As it drives forward, and as he moves from one place to the next, utters his next word, and more, Between Four Walls grows darker and more entertaining.
Between Four Walls is one small part of a bigger picture, and with the little bit of information that this part provides, I’m not sure that anyone is fully able to comprehend the complete scope of what’s to come. I think that’s kind of exciting. Not just that there is more to come, but it’s exciting that Director Bruna Braga sort of allows this short to exist on its own in all of its mysterious glory.
Again, while I’m able to get the gist of the film, the real meaning behind the film remains hidden throughout. I’m really intrigued by the mystery of the whole thing, the way in which we are pulled through the narrative without ever really being given answers. A darkness looms from beginning to end, and it works to reel viewers in, to create suspense, terror, and more–and Berkey constantly exists within that darkness. Between Four Walls is brilliantly dark–and with Berkey being this incredible, this film delivers so well in this regard.
Between Four Walls is just a small part of a whole, but it possesses incredible emotion and powerful visuals. It does such a wonderful job of appealing to viewers and keeping them engaged throughout its entirety. Between Four Walls does so much in such a short amount of time, and while the entirety of the story isn’t understood here, the mystery present in the film is truly incredible.
