Babes in Toyland (1961)

Writer's picture: Kyle BainKyle Bain

As I am not typically a fan of musicals, it was hard for me to get into this film. When the songs are interesting and/or fun I can sometimes get on board; this film’s songs were not good, to say the least. I particular, the opening song about toasting with lemonade was one of the most ridiculous and unappealing songs I think I have ever heard. That was until I heard Annette Funicello sing “I Can’t Do the Sum;” which was incredibly sexist. I am also very confused as to how the characters Gonzorgo and Roderigo somehow see a distinction between “drowning” and “killing” someone. Something that annoyed me about this film was the fact that Funicello’s Mary Contrary shows almost no emotion throughout the entire film; little to no emotion was shown when learning her fiancé was dead or when she found out he was actually still alive. The story itself wasn’t half bad. If the story had been told in a more interesting fashion, I think I may have been able to enjoy the film somewhat. To be quite honest, if I never see this film again it will be too soon. http://m.imdb.com/title/tt0054649/
