Art Dealers (2023)

-Written by Kyle Bain.

He’s just a normal guy. He’s shy. He struggles to meet new people or hold effective conversations. Yet, he’s the lead singer of a Philadelphia band called Low Cut Connie. His name is Adam Weiner, and while he may sometimes struggle off stage, his ability to create something spectacular with his band on stage is simply miraculous. He and the rest of Low Cut Connie are Art Dealers, spending the better part of their days pouring their blood, sweat, and tears into something spectacular.

Art Dealers is hardly a documentary. What it is is a recording of a series of performances by Low Cut Connie, pieced together to create something larger and captivating (that’s not to say that their individual performances weren’t already captivating–because I’m not sure that this could be further from the truth). Every once in a while viewers get to hear the spoken words of Weiner and some of the other band members, as they express their gratitude for the opportunities that this musical venture has provided them. They discuss themselves briefly, with Weiner being the most prominently featured individual in these interview-esque scenarios.

Had the tunes of Low Cut Connie not been entertaining, it’s very likely that Art Dealers would have failed to entertain anyone that didn’t appreciate the music. So, it’s honestly a risky move on the part of Directors Roy Power and Weiner to put all of their eggs in the music basket. However, high risk equals high reward, and that’s exactly what the directing duo gets out of Art Dealers, a film that pays off massively.

Again, we really only get tidbits of interview sessions in the grand scheme of Art Dealers, but every second is used to the advantage of the team and the film as a whole. These instances are led almost entirely by Weiner, and he ensures that viewers are able to understand and appreciate the other band members. As we grow closer to the diverse group of musicians we are pulled further and further into the film, connecting more with their sound and their mission along the way.

Art Dealers really doesn’t feel like a documentary, focusing almost entirely on the live performances of Low Cut Connie with only bits of discussion along the way. This team uses music and fun to their advantage, again and again ensuring that viewers are thoroughly entertained. Having never heard of Low Cut Connie prior to watching Art Dealers I wasn’t sure what to expect–but after viewing this film I consider myself a fan of the band.
