A Quiet Place (2018)

I have to start off by saying that sometimes a preconceived notion of a film can severely hinder how one views it (regardless of whether it’s negative or positive), no matter how hard one tries. This film was a perfect example of this for me. Prior to seeing this film I had heard nothing but good things; I heard how this was potentially one of the best horror films ever made. Having this idea when seeing the film for the first time, I believe, ruined how much I liked the film. I thought that John Krasinski and his wife, Emily Blunt, performed incredibly well throughout the entire film. I found it astounding that through the majority of the film, these two actors were unable to speak. I would assume that not being able to speak would make it more difficult that normal to act, however, I felt that their acting did not suffer in the least. Millicent Simmonds’ character, Regan Abbott, was terribly annoying. My biggest criticism of the film would have to be that the writers and directors failed to make me feel for this young character. Her character was unrelatable (at least I found her to be this way) and she appeared to be terribly ungrateful towards the parents that have selflessly cared for her, even after she was the cause of severe havoc among their family early on in the film. It was hard to feel sympathetic towards a character that took her frustration, due to her own mistakes, out on the people that care for her. The film is original, I can’t say that I’ve seen or heard of anything that even remotely resembles this film. To come up with an idea as unique as this is truly awesome and I commend Scott Beck, Bryan Woods and John Krasinski for doing just that. I even thought that the writers made the film incredibly touching and sad at the end; enough that it actually made me enjoy the film and Krasinski’s character, Lee Abbott, more than I would have without the one scene I’m speaking of. However, even with this original idea and the films potential to be very scary, I was underwhelmed with the scare factor because of all of the amazing reviews I had heard prior to watching. All in all, it was a good film, just a let down compared to the reviews. Also, the aliens in this film slightly resemble Venom from Marvel comics. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6644200/?ref_=nv_sr_1
